Our mission is simple - to promote and preserve the Civil War history of Augusta, Kentucky, and the Civil War battle that took place there in 1862. Men of John H. Morgan’s command, under control of his brother-in-law Basil Duke, squared off against the local Home Guard, led by of Joshua Taylor Bradford. It was a short, sharp affair, lasting part of an afternoon, yet the Home Guard’s defense prevented Duke from crossing the Ohio River and threatening Cincinnati.
We are moving forward in three main areas, Promotion, Education, and Preservation. If you are interested in helping, we would enjoy hearing from you!
We ask that you become a part of the story, a story of legacy, a story that should not be forgotten. Together let’s preserve the stories of the combatants and the civilians affected by the war. In order to do that, we need your help.
We have plans to create and install several interpretive markers around town, markers that will tell the stories. In order to design, create, and install those markers, we need funding.
We also hold events throughout the course of the year, including the annual American Battlefield Trust’s Park Day to other events.
In great deeds, something abides. On great fields, something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear; but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls… generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream; and lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls. - Joshua Chamberlain
