Park Day - Coburn-Baker Cemetery

Park Day - Coburn-Baker Cemetery

We have made great strides in bringing this abandoned cemetery to a state where visitors can stop by and actually move about the cemetery, but we are far from done! In previous years we cleared all the invasive honeysuckle from the front and cleaned out most of the interior, and then came back to clean along the north and south fence lines. This year we will tackle the western fence line, which will really enhance the view of the cemetery from Kentucky 19.

We’ll need chainsaws and brush cutters, and folks to help pull away the cuttings. Weed eaters are also a good item to bring to give the cemetery a nice look before the Veteran’s Day weekend.

There are two Civil War and two Revolutionary War soldiers buried in the cemetery, along with several other citizens. Let’s show them respect and show that they are not forgotten.

Wear work clothing and sturdy footwear. We’ll work for a few hours and then hit the town for cold beer.

American Battlefield Trust Park Day - Coburn-Baker Cemetery

Join us once again for the American Battlefield Trust Park Day!

We will be gathering at the Coburn-Baker Cemetery, site of our last Park Day event. This cemetery has been overgrown for some years, and last year we made great strides to reclaim the cemetery for public visitation. It is the resting place of two Civil War and two Revolutionary War veterans.

We will need help with picking up limbs and brush. We will also cut honeysuckle along the property lines. We recommend wearing work clothes and gloves. Please bring power tools if you have them. Chainsaws, brush cutters, and a couple of wheelbarrows would be of great help. We will have a wood chipper onsite this year to reduce the cuttings.

We will meet in front of the cemetery by 10:00 a.m. and knock off hours later. Can’t make it at ten? Stop by later and help as you can. This is a volunteer effort, so work at your own pace and enjoy taking care of this cemetery.

Make it a day…have lunch at one of the great restaurants in the heart of Augusta. Stop for a glass of wine at the Baker-Bird Winery. Enjoy the view of the Ohio River from along the shore. Enjoy the shops along Main Street.

Speaker Series - David Mowery - Cincinnati in the Civil War: Then and Now

During the American Civil War, Cincinnati played a crucial role in preserving the United States. Not only was the city the North’s most populous in the West, but also it was the nation’s third most productive manufacturing center. The Queen City of the West served as a key provider of the Union's soldiers, weapons, supplies, medical aid, and political influencers. In this presentation, Cincinnati historian David L. Mowery will reveal some of the Queen City's key structures, such as military installations, hospitals, churches, businesses, and private homes, in the way they appeared at the time of the Civil War. Simultaneously, he will show how those same buildings look today. Come join David as he gives the highlights of Cincinnati's impact on the outcome of the Civil War through a visual comparison of the past with the present.

David L. Mowery is a native resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. American military history piqued his interest at an early age. Since childhood, he has researched and visited over seven hundred battlefields across fifty states and nine countries. In 2001, David joined the all-volunteer Ohio Civil War Trail Commission as its Hamilton County representative, but over the years his role expanded to include the final design and historical validation of the entire length of the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail of Ohio. He is the coauthor of Morgan’s Raid Across Ohio: The Civil War Guidebook of the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail (Ohio Historical Society, 2014) and the author of Morgan’s Great Raid: The Remarkable Expedition from Kentucky to Ohio (History Press, 2013) and Cincinnati in the Civil War: The Union's Queen City (History Press, 2021). Since 1995, David has been a member of the Cincinnati Civil War Round Table, for which he has written various papers on Civil War subjects and has led many Civil War tours of the Cincinnati region. He has also served with the Buffington Island Battlefield Preservation Foundation, the grass-roots organization working to preserve Ohio’s largest Civil War battlefield.

No admission, but we will be accepting donations to help cover costs.

Speaker Series - Lincoln and Grant, the Alliance That Won the Civil War

Cincinnati historian Chris Burns will present his talk during the Civil War weekend event.

Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant knew each other personally for only 13 months before Lincoln was assassinated. But in that perilous time, the nation’s soul and future was at stake. The two westerners thought alike, both matured greatly and fervently enjoyed each other’s company. This story unveils that alliance, which forged a friendship and eventually won the war.

American Battlefield Trust Park Day - Coburn-Baker Cemetery

Join us for the American Battlefield Trust Park Day!

We will be gathering at the Coburn-Baker Cemetery, about 1.25 miles north of the AA Highway (KY 9) along KY 19 (Augusta-Chatham Road). This cemetery holds the remains of three, and possibly four, veterans - two from the American Revolution, one known Federal soldier from the American Civil War, and possibly one unknown Confederate, a casualty of the Battle of Augusta.

The cemetery is overgrown with honeysuckle, brush, and small trees. We will be removing as much of this overgrowth as we possibly can. Bring pruners, saws, and chainsaws if you are willing to use one. We will also need plenty of people helping to drag cut brush away.

Wear work clothes and bring gloves.

We will meet in front of the cemetery by 10:00 a.m. and knock off two to three hours later. Can’t make it at ten? Stop by later and help as you can. This is a volunteer effort, so work at your own pace and enjoy taking care of this cemetery.

POSTPONED FOR A FUTURE DATE!

We will do a cleanup at Coburn-Baker Cemetery, and depending on turnout, perhaps a cleanup at Payne Cemetery.

Coburn-Baker is the final resting place for one Civil War and one Revolutionary War soldier, and perhaps one Confederate trooper killed at the Battle of Augusta.

Meet at the cemetery, which is on Augusta Chatham Road (KY 19), 1.4 miles north of the AA. The cemetery is overgrown so we will need many hands and tools, such as brush cutters, pruners, chainsaws, and hand saws. Wear work clothes and bring gloves and eye protection. We will give a brief talk on the cemetery and soldiers, and then HAVE FUN working on restoring this cemetery and honoring these truly forgotten people.
