Civil War Days!
Another successful Civil War Days event this past weekend! We saw more reenactors and visitors this year and there was plenty to do and see. The living history camp, artillery firing (four artillery pieces this year), music by Steve Ball, an afternoon skirmish, ladies tea, open houses, a Civil War tour, Echo Hall opened, Old Jail tours…all enhanced by beautiful weather! We missed the vintage baseball, but I hear that it will return next year.
Not enough thanks can be said for those who were involved, but three names need to be pointed out among the rest: Tourism Director Janet Hunt was everywhere during the event, supported by her husband Gale. These two made certain that every aspect of the event went off without a hitch! And Steve Glaza organized all the living historians, which continues to grow! The event only happened because these three were dedicated to seeing it through.
A few thoughts about improving the event - more signs around town would be a nice touch as if one was on Main Street one might have missed where the events were happening. Civil War Augusta will be helping in this regard by having a more signs made.
Also, Janet and Gale need help! More volunteers are needed to help run the event, so if you are interested reach out to Janet at jhunt@augustaky.com and let her know what you can do to assist! Next year this writer will be helping put the signs up around town!
More attendance! Even if you have been to the event in the past, plan on visiting every year. Not only will this encourage the living historians to return each year, but it will also show the city that this event is worth holding every year.
Looking forward to 2024! The dates will be September 28th and 29th.
